If you want to find out what an atlatl is, then come to the 30th annual Moundville Native American Festival this week!

On October 3-6, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the University of Alabama’s Moundville Archaeological Park will be celebrating Native American culture through performers, craft vendors, teachers, food and music. Learn more about specific activities below!

Festival Admission:  $12 for Adults, $10 for Students and Seniors. Group rates are available with early registration! Pre-registered groups of 10 or more are $8 per person.

 

Native American Stage

The Native American Stage will feature storytellers, renowned dancers and musicians, such as GrayHawk Perkins. Both traditional and contemporary performances will be featured throughout the festival. Listen to ancient native stories and legends, the haunting harmony of flutes and the heartbeat of native music in drums and rattles.

Living History

With authentic sights, sounds and smells, the Living History Camp brings the past to life. Reenactors will be dressed in period clothing, with items teaching about the importance of the fur trade in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Listen to the stories about their lives during this time, while learning about their culture.

Kids Activities

There are many activities intended for kids of all ages, including experiences playing native games and making crafts. Kids will learn how to play stickball, throw an Indian football and try their hand at Indian Twister. Other activities include making shell bead necklaces and dressing up like Southeastern Indians.

Arts and Crafts

There are two ways to participate with the arts and crafts at the Moundville Native American Festival! Learn about native skills, such as pottery being pit fired, making rivercane baskets and carving wooden longbows, in the Arts and Crafts Arbor. At Knapper’s Corner, visitors will be able to watch toolmakers from around the country reproduce ancient work, including “flintknapping.” Purchase authentic art prints, musical instruments, toys, books, jewelry and other souvenirs in the Trader’s Circle or the Arts Market

Jones Museum

Take a tour of the Jones Archaeological Museum! Here you will find state-of-the-art exhibits that tell a story about the nobility who once lived in Moundville. There are stunning artifacts, recreated scenery and a special effects theatre to help teach about Native American culture.

Just over the river from downtown Tuscaloosa rests Kentuck Art Center, the centerpiece of the local art community. One the first Thursday of each month they host a quaint little shindig to help you relax and explore their unique scene. Don’t get the blues! Alabama Blues Week is back in Tuscaloosa. The fun continues with the weekly Live at the Plaza, Black Warrior Brewery tour, and CHOM’s special event. Fill your weekend with our exciting and entertaining events.

Alabama Blues Week

Alabama Blues Week 2018 includes multiple live blues performances at area venues. The Alabama Blues Project is collaborating with the University of Alabama’s School of Music faculty and College of Continuing Studies to help keep the blues alive through this annual event. Not to toot our own horn, but the areas most talented blues musicians are here to perform for you! A detailed schedule can be found at http://alblues.com/. The community events do not require registration.

Some end of the week Blues Week events are:
DieDra and The Ruff Pro Band play on Thursday, July 12th, at Band of Brothers from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Live at the Plaza is another free event on Friday, July 13th, at Government Plaza from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Alabama Blues Week Concert is the exception to community events. Register to see the culmination of the weekend’s hard work put in by talented area students, renowned musicians, UA music faculty, and the Alabama Blues Project Advanced band. The concert will be held on Saturday, July 14th from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The doors of Moody Music Concert Hall will open at 7 p.m.
Blues, Bloody’s & Brunch is the last community event of Alabama Blues Week. FIVE bar opens at 9 a.m. on Sunday, and the band will perform from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Live at the Plaza

Tuscaloosa continues its Live at the Plaza summer concert series. Every Friday throughout the month of July, Government Plaza features local bands from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The family-friendly environment also encourages pets, so make sure to bring your furry friend to this free and public event! Black Warrior Brewery Tours

Every Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Black Warrior Brewery offers a public tour. This is a chance to learn about the history and magic behind the brewing process. Check in with the bartender and get your day going! Each tour is roughly 45 minutes long.

Inspect Insects at CHOM

Inspect insects at the Children’s Hands-On Museum this Saturday, July 14th, anywhere between 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Examine specimens from all over the world, make a bug hat, and decorate a bug. CHOM is the Children’s Hands-On Museum of Tuscaloosa. Three floors of fun for families, school groups, and more for children to explore, create and discover. Admission is $9 for everyone, with the exception of one-dollar off for those sixty-five and older, then free admission for any child under the age of one. Find a number of fast food and fine dining restaurants located within walking distance of the museum.

Paddle Board Rental

Paddleboard rentals are available on the docks by Riverwalk Condominiums and at Lake Nicol State Park. This is a fun and affordable activity for individuals, groups, or parties. In other words, paddle boarding is an easily accessible activity for all ages.

 

Lake Adventures

Lake Nicol, Lake Harris, and Lake Lurleen offer incredible views, safe hiking trails, and picnicking environments. Lake Nicol and Lake Lurleen offer additional water activities. You can rent paddle boards on Lake Nicol and paddleboats on Lake Lurleen. Along with that, Lake Nicol and Lake Harris provide picnic tables. However, don’t be afraid to just lay down a blanket or set up an ENO to relax at any of these beautiful family-friendly lakes.

 

Walk the River

The Riverwalk is one of the most popular places in Tuscaloosa. It is the perfect running, biking, walking and dog walking trail. The path is divided by a painted line for all walkers, runners, and bikers to enjoy their experience safely. Street lamps line the trail for people to visit at any time. The Riverwalk runs between Jack Warner Parkway and the beautiful Black Warrior River. Playgrounds, picnic tables, benches, and gazebos are found along the path of this family-friendly zone. In addition, the Riverwalk will lead you to food and shopping locations; including Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt to cool down your hot summer day.

 

Bower’s Park

Bower’s Park offers unlimited family fun! At 1600 James I Harrison Jr. Pkwy E, you can play numerous sports. In addition, the Bower’s Park pool is a popular place to explore the poolside rock wall, giant slides, and more. With as many fun activities going on at Bower’s Park, you still have the opportunity to for a relaxing outing. Tuscaloosa has several golf course options: Ol’ Colony, North River Yacht Club, Links at Tuscaloosa, Indian Hills Country Club, Tall Pines, and Hidden Meadows. All courses are available on weekends. At Ol’ Colony Golf Complex you can find an 18-hole course, driving range, and a free 3-hole course with balls available to purchase on site. The North River Yacht Club provides an 18-hole course with an exceptional putting surface. Indian Hills Country Club offers a summer camp for junior golfers of all ages and abilities. Tall Pines Golf Club is Tuscaloosa newest public golf course. It is an 18-hole course with an available cart. Lastly, Hidden Meadows Golf Course provides an 18-hole course and includes a driving range and a large putting green.

 

Explore Campus

The University of Alabama is known to have one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country. At the center point of campus is the University’s quad. This is a perfect place to picnic, throw a Frisbee, take your dog, or just hang out. The quad is surrounded by an incredible view of historic landmarks. From the quad, you can see the President’s Mansion, Gorgas Library, Denny Chimes and more! At Denny Chimes, you will find why the University of Alabama is where legends are made. Hand and footprints of some of Alabama’s most legendary football players are found surrounding the monument. But don’t stop there! The Walk of Champions at the front of the stadium is where you can find statues of Nick Saban, Bear Bryant, and several other legendary Alabama football coaches. Explore campus for a historic and beautiful experience.

Live at the Plaza

Every Friday night in June and July, the Government Plaza will host live music by the best performers and bands in our area. So far, Tuscaloosa locals have come out each Friday night to enjoy the talent, delicious food, and lively atmosphere. This Friday, June 29th from 6-9 pm, The Lamont Landers Band will be performing. The event is free and will be accompanied by various food truck and vendors. Audience members will be able to purchase alcohol from local bars and restaurants surrounding the plaza, so be sure to pop in to your favorite venue and take a look at what’s offered! Bring a picnic blanket or lawn chair, gather up your friends and family and head out to the plaza for an evening of live entertainment. And don’t forget to bring your pets!

 

Tedeschi-Trucks at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater

We are thrilled that the Tedeschi Trucks Band will be in town this weekend performing at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater! The Tedeschi Trucks Band is a blues-rock group that has released three albums and won a Grammy award for the Best Blues Album for their 2011 release of Revalator. In the south, we love nothing more than to sit back, enjoy a drink, and listen to the soulful melody of the Blues. Another piece of info that might push you over the edge to attending this show is that the Drive-By Truckers will be the opener! If you’ve never seen this Athens, GA based band that is all about the South then you simply must. This is the show of the summer!

Powerhouse soul singer and The Voice contestant Amber Sauer will visit Tuscaloosa on Thursday evening to perform at the rooftop bar of Hotel Indigo along with former American Idol contestant Justin Oliver. This is a unique combination of a great performer combined with an incredible live music venue that sets Tuscaloosa apart from other cities in the South. We have also heard word that Lamont Landers will be opening for Ms. Sauer in preparation for their Friday night Live at the Plaza set. This is what we call an eventful weekend in T-town! Tuscaloosa offers a range of entertainment: from food, to music, museums, and sports. You can never go wrong with our weekly events at the Farmer’s Market and Live at the Plaza. With that being said, we have some new opportunities for fun. This weekend Druid City presents the Songwriter’s Festival and Dames roller derby.

 

Farmer’s Market 

The Farmer’s Market can be found at the River Market located on Jack Warner Parkway. It is open every Saturday from 7 p.m. till noon. The event gladly accepts EBT/SNAP, WIC & SFMNP. If you use your EBT card to purchase tokens which can be exchanged from food and other eligible items from the vendors. It’s a great way to please the entire family with fresh produce, grass fed beef, artisan crafts, and more!

 

Live at the Plaza 

If you haven’t already, you need to check out this family-friendly atmosphere at Government Plaza. This is the fourth annual Live at the Plaza summer concert series that goes on every Friday from 6 p.m. till 9 p.m. As usual, great entertainment is lined up once again for the public to enjoy this weekend. Kick back and relax to music from Druid City Songwriters followed by the Mulligan Brothers.

 

Druid City Songwriters Festival 

Get ready for a Tuscaloosa takeover of the Druid City Songwriters Festival! Venues all over downtown Tuscaloosa are preparing to welcome over forty songwriters for a special “in-the-round” experience. You will have the opportunity to enjoy performances of multi genres in some of Tuscaloosa’s favorite venues. Druid City Dames Roller Derby

Children’s Hands On Museum 

The Children’s Hands On Museum is a place of curiosity, creativity, and discovery! Three floors of fun where visitors are encouraged to touch, feel and play in our exhibits. This weekend is National Ratcatcher’s Day! On June 23rd you have the opportunity to “catch” the rats in CHOM for a prize. The event runs from 9am to 4:30pm.
