It’s finally summertime in Tuscaloosa. This weekend offers a wide range of events for all members of the family. The Tuscaloosa Comedy Group kicks off the weekend on Friday at Wilhagan’s Grill and Taproom. Also, on Friday, musician Casey Thrasher will perform at Rhythm and Brews. Saturday begins with the Farmers Market from 7:00 a.m. to noon. The Tuscaloosa Kids Triathlon starts Saturday morning, and The Great Black Warrior River Paddle-Boat Race is Saturday afternoon. Tuscaloosa Comedy Group

The second annual “Stand up 4 Rachel” comedy fundraiser is set for this Friday, May 17, at Wilhagan’s Grille and Taproom located in Temerson Square. General admission tickets, which provide entry and access to the dinner buffet, are now available for $25 each. A table of four can be reserved for $250, which brings premium reserved seating and dinner for four. The adults-only event also includes a cash bar. A DJ will begin the entertainment at 6:00 p.m., with the comedians starting at 7:00 p.m., and ending around 9:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by contacting organizers at StandUp4Rachel@gmail.com or by calling 205-292-8828. All proceeds will go to the Rachal Williams Foundation for the benefit of the Transverse Myelitis Foundation.

Casey Thrasher

Also, on Friday, May 17, American Idol contestant Casey Thrasher will perform at Rhythm and Brews at 9:00 p.m. Thrasher was on season 13 of the popular show, and made it to the top 15 male category. He has recently co-produced and released a self-titled album, which gives fans a chance to see into his life and show them a little about who he is as a person. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. and Thrasher comes on stage at 9:00 p.m.

The Great Black Warrior River Paddle-Wheel Boat Race

As we celebrate Tuscaloosa’s Bicentennial, the monthly theme for May is Transportation. What better way to honor the role the river has played in our history than with a paddle-wheel boat race? Join us as two great riverboats go head-to-head, or bow-to-bow, between Manderson Landing and the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater. The historic Bama Belle, in her first race, takes on the highly decorated Pickett Hastings. The race begins Saturday, May 18 at 3:00 p.m. For those with an adventurous steak, you can purchase a ride on the Bama Belle during the race. Tickets are $20 and provide the best seat in the house. Tuscaloosa Kids Triathlon

The 7th Annual Tuscaloosa Kids Triathlon will be held this Saturday, May 18at 9:00 a.m. at Lake Lurleen State Park Children ages five to 16 will swim, bike, and run. The triathlon benefits the Secret Meals for Hungry Children. Secret Meals fill in food gaps over the weekend for local. Each Friday, a 3.5-pound food pack is slipped into student backpacks. The pack includes two breakfasts, two lunches, and two dinners. Bring your family and help promote healthy, active lifestyles for kids while supporting a great cause.

Alabama Women’s Tennis vs. Kentucky 🐘🎾

If you are an Alabama sports fan, come cheer on the Alabama Women’s Tennis team this Friday night! Alabama looks to bounce back from a tough start to conference play as they take on Kentucky. Squats and Tots Boot Camp 🏋

The YMCA of Tuscaloosa is hosting a camp to encourage families to work out together. This camp is a 4-week program that runs every Saturday from March 9 to April 6. The classes will all start at 11 a.m. and run until 12 p.m. You do not have to be a YMCA member to participate! Babies, toddlers, and children are welcome. Childcare is available for any children not participating. The price is $75 for YMCA members and $90 for non-members, which includes admission for one parent and one child. Live Music at Green Bar 🎶

Tuscaloosa loves some live music. This weekend, Sicard Hollow will be playing at Green Bar. They plan to “bring the grass to T-Town,” as they are traveling all the way from Nashville. They will have two sets of tasteful songwriting and raging jams. This show will start Friday night at 11 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door.

Dr. Seuss Day at CHOM! 📚 🖐

The Tuscaloosa Children’s Hands-On Museum has a fun event to celebrate an important holiday – Dr. Seuss Day! This Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., admission will include Dr. Seuss related activities. Bookin’ It for TCS Libraries 5k 📚 🏃

This weekend, there is a great way to give back to the Tuscaloosa community. The Bookin’ It for TCS Libraries 5k is designed to fund Tuscaloosa City Schools’ libraries. On average, TCS library books are nearly 20 years old, and are in need of an update to their collections to best serve students. The race will be held Saturday at 8 a.m., and will start at The Alberta School of Performing Arts. Participants are encouraged to dress like their favorite book character for the race. Commoners Masquerade Ball 👑

Saturday will be a night of live big band music, dancing, food, and fun to benefit UCPWA. This Mardi Gras Celebration encourages attendees to wear costumes or masks and dress in purple, green, and gold. Of course, the more colorful beads the better. A king and queen from the UCP Krew of Commoners will be crowned! The event will be held on Saturday, March 2 from 7-11 p.m. at the Hotel Capstone. Alabama vs. LSU Men’s Basketball 🐘 🏀

Don’t miss the UA Men’s Basketball Senior Day! LSU will be visiting Coleman Coliseum for an exciting game this Saturday. The game starts at 11:00 a.m. UA students get in free with their ACT card, and the first 500 students to arrive will receive free chicken and waffles! Tuscaloosa Krispy Kreme Challenge 🍩🏅

12 doughnuts. 2 miles. 1 hour. The annual fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Alabama will be held in downtown Tuscaloosa this Saturday. Grab some teammates or tackle the challenge solo as you run a two-mile race and then finish a dozen doughnuts. Register online now!

Alabama vs. Vanderbilt Men’s Basketball 🐘🏀

Cheer Avery Johnson and the Tide on to a victory against Vandy. This Saturday, Alabama will tip-off at 5 p.m. for a game you won’t want to miss. Green Bar is bringing even more music to Tuscaloosa this weekend. Friday night features two shows, starting with Graystone! The doors will open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m. Then at 10 p.m., Little Raine Band will be performing! T-Town 200 “Black History Month” at CHOM! 🔎

February is “Black History Month,” and as usual, the Tuscaloosa Children’s Hands On Museum is ready to help you learn through some fun activities. On Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., admission will include crafts, games, and a Tuscaloosa Black History exhibit. To find out more about this event and location, visit CHOM’s website here.

Tuscaloosa Heritage Festival 🎉

The Tuscaloosa Heritage Festival, a three-day celebration of diversity and cultural sensitivity, will be held Thursday through Saturday. The festival begins with “The Blackout.” This banquet at 6 p.m. Thursday in the ballroom of the Ferguson Center will feature six noted poets. At 2 p.m. Friday, a workshop on producing art about hidden histories and social justice will be held in Room 205 of the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library. At 7:30 p.m. Friday, UA students will showcase performance art pieces about UA’s history in the auditorium of the Moody Music Building. “A Night of Heritage and Soul” will feature performances by the Westlawn Middle School Choir, Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School Steppers and other local youth organizations along with samples of international food. The free event will begin at 6 p.m. Friday at TCTA, 2800 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

The “Honoring Our Trailblazers” breakfast will begin at 9:30 a.m. at McDonald Hughes Community Center, 3101 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and will celebrate Tuscaloosa’s bicentennial and feature choir performances and guest speakers Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox and G. Christine Taylor, UA’s vice president and associate provost for diversity, equity and inclusion. The program will honor past and present community leaders, who will receive the Rev. T.Y. Rogers Jr. Community and Public Service Award.
