Bookin’ It for TCS Libraries 5k 📚 🏃

This weekend, there is a great way to give back to the Tuscaloosa community. The Bookin’ It for TCS Libraries 5k is designed to fund Tuscaloosa City Schools’ libraries. On average, TCS library books are nearly 20 years old, and are in need of an update to their collections to best serve students. The race will be held Saturday at 8 a.m., and will start at The Alberta School of Performing Arts. Participants are encouraged to dress like their favorite book character for the race. Commoners Masquerade Ball 👑

Saturday will be a night of live big band music, dancing, food, and fun to benefit UCPWA. This Mardi Gras Celebration encourages attendees to wear costumes or masks and dress in purple, green, and gold. Of course, the more colorful beads the better. A king and queen from the UCP Krew of Commoners will be crowned! The event will be held on Saturday, March 2 from 7-11 p.m. at the Hotel Capstone. Alabama vs. LSU Men’s Basketball 🐘 🏀

Don’t miss the UA Men’s Basketball Senior Day! LSU will be visiting Coleman Coliseum for an exciting game this Saturday. The game starts at 11:00 a.m. UA students get in free with their ACT card, and the first 500 students to arrive will receive free chicken and waffles! Alabama Gymnastics vs. Auburn 🐘🏅

The Iron Bowl of gymnastics is happening this weekend in Tuscaloosa! Friday night, the Crimson Tide will take on Auburn in Coleman Coliseum. The match will begin at 6:30 p.m. Students get in free with their ACT card, and general admission tickets can be purchased here.

The Vegabonds with BB Palmer at Green Bar 🎶

It wouldn’t be a Saturday in Tuscaloosa without some great live music. Green Bar has you covered with a performance from The Vegabonds with BB Palmer, a southern rock band. Alabama vs. Vanderbilt Men’s Basketball 🐘🏀

Cheer Avery Johnson and the Tide on to a victory against Vandy. This Saturday, Alabama will tip-off at 5 p.m. for a game you won’t want to miss. Live Music at Green Bar 🎶

Green Bar is bringing even more music to Tuscaloosa this weekend. Friday night features two shows, starting with Graystone! The doors will open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m. Then at 10 p.m., Little Raine Band will be performing! T-Town 200 “Black History Month” at CHOM! 🔎

February is “Black History Month,” and as usual, the Tuscaloosa Children’s Hands On Museum is ready to help you learn through some fun activities. On Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., admission will include crafts, games, and a Tuscaloosa Black History exhibit. To find out more about this event and location, visit CHOM’s website here.

Tuscaloosa Heritage Festival 🎉

The Tuscaloosa Heritage Festival, a three-day celebration of diversity and cultural sensitivity, will be held Thursday through Saturday. The festival begins with “The Blackout.” This banquet at 6 p.m. Thursday in the ballroom of the Ferguson Center will feature six noted poets. At 2 p.m. Friday, a workshop on producing art about hidden histories and social justice will be held in Room 205 of the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library. At 7:30 p.m. Friday, UA students will showcase performance art pieces about UA’s history in the auditorium of the Moody Music Building. “A Night of Heritage and Soul” will feature performances by the Westlawn Middle School Choir, Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School Steppers and other local youth organizations along with samples of international food. The free event will begin at 6 p.m. Friday at TCTA, 2800 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

The “Honoring Our Trailblazers” breakfast will begin at 9:30 a.m. at McDonald Hughes Community Center, 3101 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and will celebrate Tuscaloosa’s bicentennial and feature choir performances and guest speakers Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox and G. Christine Taylor, UA’s vice president and associate provost for diversity, equity and inclusion. The program will honor past and present community leaders, who will receive the Rev. T.Y. Rogers Jr. Community and Public Service Award.

This weekend, Theatre Tuscaloosa will be performing a gospel musical celebrating hats. In this play, the tradition of hats is traced back to African rituals and slavery and forward to the New Testament and current fashion. When a Chicago teen goes to live with her grandmother in South Carolina after the death of her brother, she discovers the beauty, ceremony, and symbolism of her triumphant, hat-wearing Southern sisters. Love boxing? Well on Friday night, the Tuscaloosa RiverMarket has an event you can’t miss! The 2019 Alabama Boxing Hall of Fame show will begin at 6:00 p.m. The event will honor some real “heavyweights” including Earnie Shavers (1970s Heavyweight Title challenger), Bob Hutto (Judge), Hedgemon Lewis (Amateur), George Godfrey (Heavyweight Champion,1920s and 1930s), and Woody Dinning (manager).

In addition, 6+ fights are on the card, including Deon “Equalizer” Nicholson who will be defending the WBC USA Cruiserweight title against Charles “Assassin” Dale. Undefeated Cuban Olympian Robert Alfonso, and Tuscaloosa boxers Thomas Knox and Ke’Eric Hinton will continue building on their undefeated records as well!

The Great Tuscaloosa Chili Cookoff 🏆

Like Chili? Thirty-plus varieties will be available for sampling at The Exchange Club’s 13th Annual Great Tuscaloosa Chili Cookoff, set for Saturday, February 9, at the Bryant Conference Center from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will include children’s activities, live entertainment, refreshments, and customized t-shirts and apron sales. Awards will be given for Best Judged Chili, People’s Choice Chili, Best Booth, Best Costume and Best Showmanship. There will also be opportunities for attendees to win valuable prizes. The funds raised by the Chili Cookoff are used for the Exchange Club’s work in Child Abuse Prevention, Youth Development, Community Service, and Honoring America projects. The Tuscaloosa 200 Bicentennial celebration continues this weekend! Thursday evening, the Launch Ceremony will kick off the year at the Tuscaloosa River Market. At this event, the Bicentennial video will be launched, the story quilt will be unveiled, and a keynote from Guy Hubbs will be delivered. You can look forward to all of this and more! From start to finish the lineup is packed with fan favorites all day long! Featuring five artists on two different stages, we’ve got something planned for music lovers of all types.

● Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit

Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit is an American southern rock/ alt-country band based in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and led by Jason Isbell, a former member of the Drive-By Truckers. The 400 Unit is Derry deBorja (keyboards), Jimbo Hart (bass) and Sadler Vaden (guitar). Chad Gamble (drums) rounds out this incredible group of musicians. Fun Fact: The band’s name comes from the 400 Unit, a colloquial name for the psychiatric ward of Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama.

● St. Paul & the Broken Bones

St. Paul & The Broken Bones formed in 2012, releasing their debut album Half the City in 2014 and its follow up, 2016’s Sea of Noise, to much acclaim. Janeway’s fearless showmanship, thoughtful lyrics, and dedication to his performance soon became the band’s calling card and paired with the inventive and skillful direction of co-band leader Jesse Phillips as well as a full eight-man roster comprised of some of the best young instrumentalists in the South, they soon became a must-see event.

● The Commodores

After the musical performances make sure to stick around for the grand finale! The firework show will begin at 9 p.m. and will be the candles on our birthday cake! You definitely do not want to miss this special event that has been two hundred years in the making!

Color Me Crazy at CHOM! 🎨

Looking for a fun way to end winter break? Take your kids to a fun event at the Children’s Hands on Museum this Saturday. New Year’s Eve for Kids at CHOM! 🎈

The Children’s Hands on Museum is hosting an event to give kids a chance to celebrate New Year’s Eve. On Monday, Dec. 31 from 9 a.m. to noon, admission will include participation in activities such as 2019 hat decorating, constructing a noisemaker, creating firework art and composing a personal time capsule.
