Destination marketing, sports tourism and visitor experiences continue generating major economic returns for the Tuscaloosa community.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (June 23, 2026) – Visit Tuscaloosa proudly announces that visitor spending generated more than $1 billion in across Tuscaloosa County in 2025, reinforcing tourism’s growing role as a major economic driver for the community. The milestone comes as Tuscaloosa continues to build momentum through a combination of collegiate athletics, industry, higher education, sports tourism, signature events, culinary experiences, outdoor recreation and strategic destination marketing efforts that attract visitors from across the region and beyond.
According to annual reporting data, visitors accounted for 20% of all spending in Tuscaloosa County in 2025, with more than 750,000 overnight visitors through 1.1 million paid accommodation room nights recorded throughout the year. Overall paid accommodation revenue reached $136.2 million through hotels and short-term rentals.
“Every visitor who stays in our hotels, dines in our restaurants, attends events, shops locally or experiences our attractions directly supports jobs, local businesses and the quality of life our residents enjoy every day,” said Kelsey Rush, President and CEO of Visit Tuscaloosa. “Tourism is a key driver of the economic vitality and cultural vibrancy of our community, and we are incredibly proud of the momentum we’re seeing across Tuscaloosa.”
Visitor spending in Tuscaloosa County was led primarily by tourism-adjacent industries including food and beverage (52%), gas and service stations (24%), retail (16%) and accommodations (9%), underscoring the broad impact tourism has across the local economy.
For Visit Tuscaloosa, sports tourism remained one of the organization’s strongest economic drivers throughout the year. Visit Tuscaloosa directly recruited, supported or assisted with more than 160 events in 2025, helping generate $24 million in event-related economic impact and more than $1.6 million in tax revenue for the community. These efforts generated more than 23,000 room nights through events, site visits and familiarization tours, complementing the broader visitation driven by Tuscaloosa’s collegiate, cultural and business assets.
Major sports and tourism wins for Visit Tuscaloosa throughout the year included:
- Hosting Athletes Unlimited Softball League games and championship events at Rhoads Stadium, generating more than 900 room nights and approximately $2 million in economic impact during the summer season
- Securing the HBCU Athletic Conference Baseball and Softball Championships for 2026–2028
- Landing the NJCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships for 2026–2028
- Supporting the continued growth of River Run Park as a new anchor for regional sports tourism
- Recruiting the 2027 Southern Travelers Explore Conference, which will bring more than 75 travel writers, journalists and content creators to Tuscaloosa

The organization also expanded destination development and visitor experience initiatives in 2025, including the launch of the Tuscaloosa Civil Rights Digital Pass, new Historic Downtown Walking Tours, growth of Tuscaloosa Restaurant Week and Tuscaloosa Oktoberfest and expanded outdoor recreation offerings along the Riverwalk, with more announcements coming soon.
In addition to tourism development efforts, Visit Tuscaloosa unveiled its new TuscaLife brand platform and launched a redesigned VisitTuscaloosa.com focused on strengthening destination awareness and converting travel interest into overnight visitation. The organization also established a public relations partnership with Lou Hammond Group, resulting in national media recognition including USA Today naming Tinsel Trail among the nation’s top public holiday lights displays and The Local Palate recognizing Tuscaloosa as one of the South’s Top 20 Culinary Towns.
