Spotlight on Local Strawberry Farming

Strawberry season in Alabama is short but sweet, and local farmers work hard each spring to bring fresh berries to the community. One farm to know is Hale Farms, which has been providing fresh, locally grown strawberries to the Tuscaloosa community since 2015.

For Wesley Hale, founder of Hale Farms, strawberry season is something special.

“There’s nothing better than a fresh strawberry straight out of the field,” Hale said. “When people taste locally grown berries during the season, they can really tell the difference.”

According to Hale, Alabama’s strawberry season typically begins in March or April and lasts until early June. Unlike store-bought berries that may spend days in transit or storage, locally grown strawberries are often picked the same day they are sold, making them noticeably fresher.

Supporting Local Agriculture and Community

Events like Strawberry Fest are more than just a fun celebration; they’re an opportunity to connect with the farmers and vendors who help Tuscaloosa thrive. Shopping at the Farmers Market supports Alabama agriculture, strengthens small businesses, and keeps local traditions growing year after year. Hale describes how supporting local farmers during strawberry season directly impacts the community.

“When people buy local strawberries, that money stays right here,” Hale said. “It helps us keep growing crops and also allows us to support local organizations.”

If you can’t make it to Strawberry Fest in April, there are plenty of opportunities to visit the market throughout the year.
